The Foley Performing Arts Association is offering something for everyone with their fall workshop schedule. From occasional artists who want to have fun at a paint party to more advanced artists who want to learn the techniques of experienced and established artists, each level of artist can find something to suit their fancy.

Vino and Van Gogh, a class the Performing Arts Center hosts regularly, is a paint party where participants pay $ 25 for materials, bring their own beverages and paint step by step with an instructor. The next events will be held Sept. 11 and Oct. 16 from 6-8 p.m.

Beginning oils and acrylics is taught monthly at the center. Each class begins the first week of the month and runs for four weeks. The upcoming classes begin Sept. 9, Oct. 7 and Nov. 7 and cost $ 80. The class is taught by Performing Arts Association director Bonnie Blaylock, and she said that she teaches everything you need to know as a beginner, such as setting up the easel and palette; learning to use and getting comfortable with the tools, brushes and palette knives; how to mix paints; and composition.

Her students in the class are truly beginners, and she teaches them how not to be afraid of the white canvas. She also hopes that her students will feel ready to join some of the more specialized classes they offer after taking her class. Each participant will also have a finished piece at the end of four weeks.

For slightly more advanced artists, the association is offering some specialized classes for the fall taught by professional painters showing the students their techniques, according to Blaylock.

Bill Thompson is an impressionist painter who has learned to apply paint in such a way to be able to suggest the subject and then use light to enhance it. His class will focus on “loose, quick paintings with a painterly look” and will help the participants work on building the paint with clean, effective color, according to a newsletter put out by Thompson. The class, set for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept 19 and 20, is $ 225.

Elizabeth Blaylock is another professional painter who uses a lot of vibrant colors and reflective light. Her workshop is called Capturing a Subject in Sparkling Color and will be taught on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 for $ 200.

A new class this fall will be the Oil Workshop on Portraits and Landscapes taught by Gregg Cartmell. Blaylock said that he is a fantastic teacher, but she is not as familiar with his overall style since this is his first class. He will also be doing demonstrations like Elizabeth and Thompson and seeing the artists’ process with your own eyes is “worth its weight in gold,” according to Blaylock. Cartmell’s class is Oct. 6 and 7 and costs $ 150.

“To have instructors of this caliber is for the city and the community of Foley extremely phenomenal,” Blaylock said. “We are so fortunate to have them.”

She said it’s a great experience to be able to learn from people whose work is shown all over the world and have been able to turn their art into something special and are now able to teach it to others. Their instructors have great rapport with the students and spend time showing the students their techniques.

“They help you to learn how to use the tools the way they do so that you can come up with a much more impressive piece of art,” Blaylock said.

She has taken workshops from both Thompson and Elizabeth and said her style is somewhere in between the two and that has helped her create some great art that has even won some competitions. She said, too, that she’s seen other beautiful work come from the painters in these classes and that people who have invested in these classes are the ones that are dedicated to learning and continue to paint. She also takes what she’s learned and uses it in the classes she teaches.

Blaylock said that they get participants from various states in the region for these classes and they often fill up fast. Elizabeth and Thompson currently do classes in the spring and fall and the Cartmell class has plans to continue if all goes well, but Blaylock said you have to get in quickly to catch them while they are here.

“Our program is one of the best in the Foley area and we are doing our very best to get our curriculum up to par with the surrounding areas,” Blaylock said, adding that she thinks they’ve done a great job so far.
